Trentino
Trentino, surprisingly ripe wines in the Italian Alps
From Lake Garda to the terraces of the Cembra Valley, the vineyards have the distinctive character of the Trentino landscape. The complex morphology of Trentino’s landscape, together with the nearby Dolomites and the numerous lakes generate in a limited area many different micro-climates. 5 DOC designations of controlled origin (Trentino, Trento, Teroldego Rotaliano, Valdadige and Casteller) and 2 IGT geographical areas (Vigneti delle Dolomiti and Vallagarina) protect the identity of an area and the typicity and distinctiveness of the wines produced.
The Valle dei Laghi is situated to the western side of Trentino. It winds along a path dotted by numerous lakes and streams, the largest of which is Lake Garda. The Adige Valley is located centrally along the river Adige with the Piana Rotaliana and the Vallagarina, which follow each other from north to south along the river. On the eastern side of Trentino, we find the steep vineyards of the Cembra Valley, which follows the last stretch travelled by the Avisio stream and, further south, the Valsugana.
The mountain viticulture extends over an area amounting to more than 10,000 hectares, which includes very different climatic areas and soils and about twenty varieties that thrive between 200 and 1,000 metres above sea level.
