Graubünden, an Alpine treasure by the Rhine
The principal vineyard area of Canton Graubünden - also called Bündner Herrschaft or Heidiland - is located on the right bank of the Rhine between Chur and Bad Ragaz. Relatively small, given the large area of the canton, it covers just over 400 hectares. The climate is particularly mild, and the surrounding mountains protect the vines from cold winds. The soils are rich in limestone, as in Burgundy. Thanks to its flagship grape variety, Pinot Noir, this small wine-growing region produces high quality wines. In addition to international grape varieties, there is also a very old indigenous white grape variety called Completer which is grown almost exclusively in this area.
