Europe’s most culturally complex Alpine wine landscape where volcanic valley floors meet Dolomite limestone heights
Alto Adige/Südtirol is the northernmost wine region of Italy, its vineyards climbing from the volcanic valley floors around Bolzano/Bozen toward the limestone peaks of the Dolomites. Ceded from Austria to Italy in 1919, the province remains predominantly German-speaking, with Italian and Ladin also holding official status, and wines commonly carry variety names in more than one language. Around twenty grape varieties are grown across a compact area, an unusual diversity for its size, led by Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc. The region's own varieties carry its clearest identity: Lagrein, structured and deeply coloured, from the porphyry around Bolzano/Bozen, and Gewürztraminer, which traces its name to the village of Tramin. A new classification system introduced from the 2024 vintage designates 86 distinct geographical units with tighter yields.
